Lye Yee Tan

Pronoun: She, her, hers

Lye Yee has worked as a counselling psychologist since 2002. She is fully registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and a member of the Australian Association of Psychologist Inc.

Her career in counselling began at the University of Sydney where she worked mainly with international students; providing support, orientation and counselling. She found fulfilment in this career as it challenged how the years of academia in psychology needed to be adjusted when working with diverse international clients. After 12 years at university, she moved into private practice where she worked in a drugs and alcohol facility and medical centres in Sydney CBD and Oxford St, Darlinghurst. In the past 8 years, she has continued to see a diverse client base; ranging from corporate professionals to artistic performers, university students to pensioners, LGBTIQ+ communities, neuro-diverse clients, clients with chronic health conditions and more. As a result, she has developed a wide resource network of local support services, programs, specialists and other contacts that may be helpful for her clients.

Her counselling work is influenced by Narrative therapy, mindfulness and creative therapies (eg using art, visualisations, creative writing); where she aims to collaboratively engage with clients to explore how they see themselves in the context of what’s happening in their lives. She tries to bring awareness when clients see themselves through a critical lens and invites them to look upon themselves with more kindness instead.  She hopes to show clients that through different techniques, their counselling experience can be safe, meaningful and fun.

It is important for her to be a visible and supportive ally for First Nations people and the LGBTIQ+ community; and provide a practice that aims to be neuro-diverse affirmative and culturally-sensitive. Lye Yee has personal connections in each of these communities and it is important to her that this is acknowledged in sessions.

She unfortunately is unable to work with those who have current Work Cover/insurance cases or have legal charges/issues, as she is not SIRA accredited and does not have forensic expertise.

Post Grad Dip Psychology- Western Sydney University
